Yesterday, State Representative Justin J. Pearson won a Primary for U.S. House of Representatives. These images were made in July during during a Bedford County Democratic candidate meet and greet. That afternoon several candidates were given the opportunity to speak to a small yet dedicated crowd in an outdoor pavilion in Shelbyville, TN. Near the end a storm bringing heavy wind and rain blew through the area, Rep. Pearson stayed to speak with attendees. Before TN’s voting Districts were redrawn in May of this year due to the results of a Special Session, Rep. Pearson’s District 9 consisted almost exclusively of Memphis. Rep. Pearson and his team had already done a healthy amount of canvassing in the area. After the redrawing, his constituents were now spread throughout several counties along Southern TN, the farthest of which is a county just South of Nashville and 4 hours away from Memphis. This week during a special session called by Gov. Bill Lee, the Tennessee General Assembly met on the topic of redistricting the state’s voter map. This follows a Supreme Court decision last week in Louisiana v. Callais that ruled Louisiana’s 2024 election map, which created a second majority-Black congressional district, was “an unconstitutional racial gerrymander”. Voter redistricting is a process that usually takes years and this week it was pushed through in three days, several State laws were changed or dismissed in order to make this happen so quickly. Memphis was TN’s only Blue district and in a harrowing move it was severed into 3 separate districts, now making all of TN Red. Images made while on assignment for Bloomberg
